The always-exciting Yoko Taro, the auteur creator of the NieR series, has reportedly put the president of publisher Square Enix, Takashi Kiryu, on blast during a London concert. Both men were apparently in attendance at a performance of the NieR: Orchestra Concert earlier this month when Taro invited audience goers to clap and cheer as loudly as they could so Kiryu would know how voracious the fans' appetite is for a sequel.
According to a member of the audience (thanks, Eurogamer), the room immediately and predictably "erupted into claps, cheers and yells". Even more intriguing, however, was the reportedly repeated use of the word "REPENT" as "part of some dialogue". During its final usage, the spelling shifted to REP3NT, leading some fans to speculate that it may be significant, even a potential NieR 3 subtitle.
It's a pretty cool story; even if our inner cynic can't help but think it sounds staged, it means NieR is once again in the collective gaming conscience, which can't be a bad thing. It's been seven years since Automata and three since the release of Replicant. What do you think? Do you dare to believe? Let us know in the comments section below.

Man I still need to play Nier Automata again, I tried playing it multiple times and I couldn't enjoy it.
@Nepp67 I'm honestly in the same boat, environments were bland, although the carnival was fun but I just couldn't finish the game.
The story started interesting but quickly became a chore and didn't get me intrested in it.
Granted, I didn't get far and I do still wonder what happens to the giant robot that was friendly.
Shoot, I need to try it again.
@RawnDawn Pascal?? Oh no….
@personauser93 Bro do not tell me bad news, heck, lie to me instead 😭
@Nepp67 Mate if you tried more than once and didn't enjoy it, just leave it. I like it, but our time in this world is too limited, spend it doing things that you like instead.
Nier is great and all but we Need More Drakengard
If we do somehow get a Nier 3 I wanna know what Accord's been doing since Drakengard 3 since they mention her in Nier and Automata in passing
@breakneck it was highly recommended to me as well. Played for a bit then got incredibly bored.
I loved how off the wall the game was. When the credits rolled and it started a totally different game I was so shocked.
I doubt a sequel will capture the same magic since I went in at launch totally blind to what kind of games he makes, but I'd still love to revisit a non-gacha game from the creative mind of Yoko Taro
there is no way that a nier sequel wasn't already greenlit long ago. not a chance. the game supposedly only cost 10-20m to develop and sold more than 7.5m copies. the profit margins would have been insane for s-e. why are people so skeptical about a sequel? haha... it is coming, relax.
A third installment would easily be the best gaming news in many years. There are only a handful of games that made such a lasting impression on me as Automata did.
I really need to play it again, but my backlog is huge…
I don't know how to feel.
I loved the original Nier, but Automata didn't do it for me. Felt like a retread of the first with just androids/machines.
It's time. Square & Platinum team up with Sony's budget and xDev support.
@Nepp67 Automata is a weird one - the first ‘playthrough’ is fun, but the characters and story didn’t really hit me until late on.
Then comes your second playthrough, and things hit a little harder.
Then comes the third playthrough, and everything just makes sense, it kicks into overdrive and becomes one of the most intense, riveting heart-breaking experiences I’ve found in gaming.
But “put in 30+ hours minimum and it gets really good, honest” is a tough sell.
That was such a yoko taro thing to do 😅😊
Don’t do this to me on a Monday morning! Don’t get my hopes up like this! 😂
Can I get a new Drakengard first 😅
Yoko Taro should work with Valve to get Nier 3 out as soon as possible.
I there ever is a Nier 3, I hope it'll be closer to Automata than Replicant/Gestalt
@Areus Would love a Drakenguard remake that play better than the original.
A NieR 3 would be most welcome. Loved the first two NieR games, Automata a bit more.
@JPEGMakima I would to see the Drakengard come to PS4 even without a big upgrade. Make it work and run at 60FPS with a better resolution and I'm happy.
@Areus Automata was my first introduction to Yoko Taro, so at this point I’d even welcome remasters of the original Drakengard games just so I can actually experience them.
Absolutely loved Automata, and enjoyed Replicant remake to an extent however out of two only managed to platinum Automata. The storyline of both were very interesting to me, it’s just Replicant had some grindy trophies I didn’t much care for.
If Yoko Taro cooks up a sequel I’m in, unless it’s some sort of gacha or other kind of mobile games.
I’d even be interested to try out Drakengard, as I heard that’s where this whole thing started. Remaster/remake of sorts would be welcome.
Nier automata is a cool game.a sequel would be welcome.word up son
@andrix9743 Did you play the Voice Of Cards games? They are pretty much what it say on the tin, but oddly very relaxing with lovely artwork and music… and a little bit of that Yoko Taro magic.
Bottom line is will nier 3 play like automata or the first game? Cause im only buying if theres sexy androids and platinum games makes the hack and slash style
@andrix9743 umm i think theres no way to not get the platinum for automata because you just beat the game and use in game money to buy the trophies
@NieR_Dark Nope, haven't heard of it until now for some reason. PS has a free demo I'll try that out later. Thanks!
@BansheeNorn I don't think I had done that, can't recall though because it's been a very long time since I played it if I'm honest.
Fingers crossed. Replicant was good but Automata was amazing.
I’m hoping stellar blade fills my itch until Nier 3
@andrix9743 after platimum’ing Replicant, I have to agree the trophies were very grindy for some of them. Still love both Automata & Replicant, but that trophy list was a pain
@CWill97 I think the only few trophies I have left to get involves upgrading weapons and beating the game under some time constraint. The cutscenes are what makes the game fun for me I wouldn’t like to be skipping them to get some trophy.
Man I want nier automata 2 and I want it now 😃
Played the original Nier on release on PS3 and got hooked, Automat is one of the games I re bought multiple times and didn’t regret it. A 3rd one would be great, but I would love a Drag-on Dragoon 3 remake before that. Amazing game with horrible performance.
@Hyena_socks
It's kinda sad thinking how many people probably skipped over the third campaign given how incredible it is compared to the first two. Anybody who only did the first one is probably thinking 'what was so special about this game?'
I would recommend people to watch the anime if you can't play the game. The second part (which adapts the third campaign) is due this year.
@reek absolutely, I love how playful it is but that could backfire. The first two playthroughs are glorified introductions in comparison, but really set things up (trying to avoid spoilers).
I played automata and love it, but replicant is pure trash, the world, design, sons, story its all good but its all behind a repetitive and tedious grindly wall that made you do the same thing in the same places for hours, never finish the game and dont want to. The mobile game its the same, good content behind a gacha and some tedious grind, if the next game is gona be like that then its better dont make the game at all.
